Not every release arrives with listening instructions, but Brisbane quartet Plastic Wood established beyond any doubt that they deemed it desirous that their debut full-length Australian Weather be enjoyed as an album, in full, from start to finish.

Immediately, the cynic within suggests that this is a veiled admission that the record lacks any stand-out, stand-alone tracks; an assumption dispatched two tracks in with Under The Evergreen. It’s a shining example of the band’s fusion of acoustic and electric instrumentation, showcases their aptitude for warm vocal harmonies and – like any good pop song – has a catchy chorus that you can sing along to.

Scared too, with more than a hint of mid-to-late 1990s alt-rock influence leaps out as another compelling single; without a hint of irony or intended backhandedness to the compliment, if this was ’97, this track would nestle very comfortably on the soundtrack of the 15-25 age bracket-targeted film of your choice.

The record’s remaining 11 tunes point to a swath of influences that seemingly span the last 40 years – from the folk of the 1970s to ‘90s alternative and the near-omnipresent sincerity of the singer-songwriter. The first minute of Temperance Man even had me wondering if they were going to push the boundaries and throw in something industrial (they didn’t, but that’s okay).

In truth, that is why the full-album approach works well here; with each track you are forced – on some level – to reassess exactly what kind of band Plastic Wood are. There are perhaps a few moments mid-album where things fall into a bit of a pattern and become bogged down, but there are constantly elements – be they the deliberately distorted vocals of Your Daughter, the near-ambient Interlude, or the entirety of banjo-driven instrumental closer Nice Day that are entirely unexpected pleasures. As such, provided you can put aside the best part of an hour for the exercise, Australian Weather is well worth the time.

Plastic Wood aren’t exploring the meteorological conditions of Australia, rather the more complex patterns of social atmospheres. After nearly a year in the studio, Australian Weather is a slick 13-track collection of folk-rock that taps into the zeitgeist of a generation of underwhelmed 20-somethings. Through their honest lyricism and relaxed rock, Plastic Wood point out that life lethargy, social politics and casual alcoholism make the Australian social landscape as weird and wonderful as cyclones and droughts on the land. Strong standalone tracks like Still Guessing, Cocaine and the rollicking instrumentation on Your Daughter prove their mettle, but the real strength of the album is apparent when listening to it as a whole. It’s then that you fully appreciate the rich touches of classic pop, rock and ‘70s folk songwriting in the developing Brisbanites’ work.
